Love your take on this Ashwin, and I see where you’re coming from. In my experience I’ve had a few candidates who have answered honestly, as you’ve mentioned, with objective examples of unfairness which have surprised me in their balanced view of things in life that may have been objectively unfair. I’ve hired most of them and it’s worked out well.
I’m not trying to bait and switch candidates with this question, but rather root out candidates who hold a pessimistic, victimized position in the world, find those who refuse to take accountability, and identify anyone who might bring our culture to a grinding halt.
This is just what has worked for me better than anything, after hundreds of interviews, good hires, and hard lessons.
